Prayer to Win the Lottery

If I were rich
I’d do good deeds.
I’d help the poor
to meet their needs.

But first, I’m sure
You won’t refuse
one tiny little
world-wide cruise,

and You can hardly
cavil at
a very modest
London flat.

I’d splurge on art
and culture next
(You know the poor
are oversexed).

In fact, they’re such
a shiftless lot,
one might as well
live high as not.

Gail White does her writing in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, where all poems are supervised by her black cat, Pushkin. Her new book, Asperity Street, will be published by Able Muse later this year. She writes light verse because art is long and life is short.
