I’m the mistress of obsolete skills
Once useful for paying my bills,
But today no one’s typing,
They’re texting and Skyping—
I’m a fish who has failed to grow gills!

Joyce La Mers started writing light verse more than eight decades ago, and went on to publish hundreds of poems in magazines ranging from Light to Collier’s to The Saturday Evening Post. A longtime Californian, she was honored in 2013 by the Ventura County Arts Council as a Literary Treasure.
