Two Limericks

Dylan Thomas, when drinking in Cardigan,
Drank hard, and the next day drank hard again.
He drank so damn hard
That he got himself barred
And the next day the barred bard was barred again.

It was such a close swimming race; Sam ahead,
Then Pam and then Sam and then Pam ahead.
The spectators agreed,
You can build up such speed
When you’re being pursued by a hammerhead.

Mark Totterdell’s poems have appeared widely in magazines in the UK and have occasionally won competitions. His collections are This Patter of Traces (Oversteps Books, 2014) and Mapping (Indigo Dreams Publishing, 2018).
