I’d Just Like a Baked Potato, Please
after Ogden Nash
Human beings are omnivorous,
which means we eat anything
and everything if it doesn’t
eat us first;
And some people believe this is the
best way to be, while others
maintain that it’s the worst.
Because, although being omnivorous
means we can eat such things
as liver and spinach without
being killed by either of them,
It also means that we very often have
to eat both in the same meal
when we’d much rather have
neither of them.
Jonathan Kanary is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in English, with an interdisciplinary concentration in Religion and Literature, at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He also serves as Associate Priest for Spiritual Direction at Christ Church Anglican. Although he has not abandoned his youthful aspiration to the exalted title of “poet,” he will happily settle for “amateur”—one who does a thing simply for the love of it.
