Hamav’dil, or That Was the Week That Was

The Lord bisected DARK from LIGHT;
The Devil imagined DYNAMITE.

The Lord pushed WATER up and down;
The Devil came up with the verb “to DROWN.”

The Lord made various kinds of HERBS;
The Devil thought “WILT” and more bad verbs.

The Lord lit up the MOON and the SUN;
The Devil grinned; “MIGRAINE, anyone?”

The Lord invented BIRDS and BEES;
The Devil just LEERED and smacked his knees.

The Lord called ANIMALS up from the soil;
The Devil saw chasms of DIESEL OIL.

The Lord formed MAN and pulled out his mate.
The Devil yawned, “Well, not long now to wait…”

Then the Lord indulged in a well-earned REST;
And the Devil rode out in his SUNDAY BEST.

Journeyman Jo

Jonah walked the waterside.
Lord said Jo!
Jonah groaned and tried to hide.
Lord said No!
Jonah jumped aboard a boat.
Lord said Whoa!
Sailors found it would not float.
Lord said Throw!
Jonah sank inside a whale.
Lord said So!
Jonah prayed him up a gale.
Lord said Go!
Jonah docked in Nineveh.
Lord said Show!
Jonah saved them right away.
Lord said Lo!
Jonah slumped beneath a gourd.
Lord said Grow!
Jonah said We done here, Lord?
Lord said Yo!
