Stalling

Here we sit, side by side,
huddled in this hollow place.
Unambiguously tied,
though I’ve never seen your face.
The things we do are commonplace,
inevitable, right as rain—
though in this moment, in this space,
we both are hoping to abstain.
Here we sit, hold back, and strain—
the silent echoes suffocate—
desperate to avoid disdain,
lest our works might fumigate.
Shuffling in place, we wait.
Neither one will take the fall.
Terrified to defecate—
a standoff in the bathroom stall.
